Today I learned that Vladimir Putin is directly responsible for Livejournal’s failure, leading to the mass blog migration here to this unmoderated blue hellscape, and ultimately leading to the evolution of The Discourse™ as we know it. RIP.
#no for real i witnessed the decline of lj live and in person and it was based in part on repeated ddos attacks from russian hackers#to silence the dissenting political blogs. eventually the whole site got sold to the russians and now political blogging there is banned#fucking….surreal.#sinister forces truly were behind this all along#anyway while the real cause of the discourse is the folly of man i’m happy to blame vladimir vladimirovich too.
…ultimately it was a combination of the 2010/2011 DDOS attacks (specifically directed at the Russian opposition leader/political blogger Alexei Navalny) rendering the site unusable juuuuust as Tumblr and Twitter were emerging as novel alternatives, plus LJ staff repeatedly refusing to listen to user concerns about UI in the exact ways we see the blue hellscape doing today. Makes u think, huh.
